Extremely dangerous how "grooming" in the context of child sexual abuse went from being a very specific pattern of isolation and trust-building with the aim of abusing someone to "telling children anything that contradicts their parents' ultra-conservative worldview is grooming" to "selling rainbow flags in a store is grooming" to "literally anyone I don't like is a groomer".
These days the word seems to most often be used by people who don't care about what it actually means and just want an easy "this person is irredeemably evil, kill them now" button.
As someone who was groomed, this trending is beyond horrifying because it's all about enabling more grooming.
I was groomed as a child, by a member of my own family, a respectable conservative man. This is a very common pattern. As soon I was old enough to be taught sex ed, I could understand what was happening to me, and I could protect myself.
So you see the plan has 3 objectives, all of them concurring to enforce grooming :
- Keeping control over sex ed within the family, where most of the grooming happens (the statistics show it, you can check)
- Stop Sex Ed so that children have no tools to understand what is happening to them and protect themselves
- Make grooming accusations so frequent and baseless that no one believes them anymore.
It was never about protecting children, it was always to enforce control over them. I'm fed up with my trauma being used by the very people perpetuating it.
